Ben stirred and blinked. The gray light of morning filtered through the gaps in the door outlining Sebastian in silver. Sebastian was awake and watching him.

“Hey,” Ben said.

“Hey.”

They laughed, and Ben leaned in and kissed Sebastian.

“Then it wasn’t in my head,” Sebastian whispered. “You see me the same way.”

Ben moved back to study him properly. He traced his fingers over Sebastian’s jaw. “I—”

A knock thumped at the bunker door, followed by Nico yelling. “Ben, you better get to the garage. Dad wants to see you now. Something about his car.”

Ben sat up, blanket ripping off Sebastian and pooling at his lap. “Shit,” he said under his breath, then scrambled to jump into his shoes. “I’ll be right there.”

“Maybe my car is in the way?” Sebastian shoved on his semi-dry jeans, wet boots, and jacket. His zipper stuck. Ben smirked, slid over to him, took the stubborn thing in his hands and did it up. A hundred questions flashed in Sebastian’s gaze, and Ben tried to answer with a soft kiss.

“Can we . . . we still need to review each other’s essay.”

“I have until lunch, then Kristina heads to work.”

“And tonight?”

“Work,” Sebastian said, shaking his head. “Monday I won’t make it to class either. Could you take notes?”

“When will you pick them up?”

“As soon as I can. Trust me.”

Nico had already dashed off, which was no surprise considering the rain and hefty winds. They sprinted over the backyard and ducked around the house to the garage. Rain hit the open garage door and sheeted over the edge like a curtain.

Ben ducked inside, water sluicing over his head and down the back of his neck.

Dad stood with his hands on his hips, glaring toward the mile-high crates of empty bottles Ben had gathered after Dad’s Christmas party. Half of the boxes had tumbled down, shattering glass and plastic bottles across the floor between their cars.

“I’ve had it up to my ears with your damn bottles,” Dad said, thrusting a hand toward the chaos. “I want to back out of the driveway without hitting this junk.”

“Sorry, Dad.” Ben ran a hand through his hair and peeked at Sebastian close behind him.

Nico barged through the door that connected the garage to the house.

“You’d think with the amount of glass you collect,” his dad continued, frustration ticking his jaw, “you’d have gathered enough money to save Christmas.”

“What?” Sebastian said sharply.

Ben’s breath left him. He shook his head at his dad as if it might take back his words.

“Clean it up,” Dad said.

“What do you mean saving Christmas?” Sebastian asked again, pushing in front of Ben, face paling.

Dad frowned and stared between the two of them. Ben tried to grab Sebastian’s hand, but he pulled out of his grip, stepping up to his dad.

Nico answered. “It’s nothing.”

Dad pinned Nico with his disappointment. “It’s not nothing. It was the one thing I’ve asked from Ben in return for everything. He should have done right by you.”

Sebastian spun on his heel. His eyes danced with confusion, and worse, pain.
